Ankle Fractures

Mehmet İşyar, M.D. Prof

Ankle fractures refer to fractures that occur in the bones in the ankle area. The ankle is one of the most complex joints of the body and ankle fractures can occur for various reasons. These fractures are usually the result of trauma and can be caused by sports injuries, falls, car accidents or blows.
The most common causes of ankle fractures can be the following:
1. **Falls:** Ankle fractures can occur as a result of falling from a height or slipping.

2. **Sports Injuries:** Ankle sprains and fractures that are common in sports such as football, basketball, volleyball.
3. **Car Accidents:** Ankle fractures may occur in traffic accidents, especially when braking, as a result of the foot getting stuck under the pedal.
Ankle fractures can cause different symptoms depending on the type and severity of the fracture. The most common types of ankle fractures are as follows:

1. **Outer Ankle Fracture (Lateral Malleolus Fracture):** These are fractures of the fibula (guide bone) located on the outside of the ankle. Such fractures are usually associated with ankle sprain.

2. **Inner Ankle Fracture (Medial Malleolus Fracture):** Fractures of the tibia (tibial bone) located on the inside of the ankle.
3. **Double Ankle Fracture (Bimalleol Fracture):** These are conditions in which both the fibula and tibia, both the outer and inner ankle bones, are fractured.

Treatment of ankle fractures may vary depending on the type and severity of the fracture and the general health status of the patient.Treatment options may include rest, use of plaster or splint, physiotherapy and surgical intervention. Surgical intervention may be required depending on the location and severity of the fracture.
