Hallux valgus, also often called “big toe deformity”, refers to a deformity of the toes. This condition refers to a condition in which the big toe (hallux) is in an abnormally curved or rotated position towards the rest of the toes. Hallux valgus can cause symptoms such as pain, swelling and discomfort in the feet.

The main symptoms of hallux valgus can be the following:

1. **Curvature of the big toe:** The big toe is curved sideways as a result of the toes rotating towards the others.

2. **Ice Cream Cone Shape:** An enlarging bone protrusion (ice cream cone shape) may form at the base of the big toe and thumb.

3. **Pain and Swelling:** Hallux valgus can often lead to pain and swelling around the ankle. This pain is felt on the side of the big toe and around the ankle.

Hallux valgus can be associated with genetic factors, habits of wearing narrow shoes, foot shape and some health problems such as rheumatoid arthritis. Treatment options may vary depending on the patient’s symptoms and the severity of the deformity.

Hallux valgus treatment options may include:

1. **Conservative Treatment:** This treatment option involves wearing more comfortable shoes, placing cushions or pads between the toes, and doing ankle exercises. These can help relieve symptoms.
